Eyre square afectionately know as the square,this central location was officially presented to the city in 1710 by Mayor Edward Eyre from whom it took its name, originally surrounded by a wooden fence it wqas enclosed with iron railings in the late 1700`s,these were removed in the 1960`s and ressurected around St. Nicholas Coligate Church,in 1965 the square was officially named Kennedy Memorial Park in honour of US President John F. Kennedy who visited Ireland in the months before his death.Today it is a vibrant area of the city and a popular area for young Galway musicians and artists alike.

The Spanish Arch located on the banks of the river corib was built in 1584. It was originally an extension of the city walls designed to protect the quays.It is infact a misnomer.There is no proven association between the building of the Arch and the spanish in Galway.This busy port area once saw large sailing ships bound for the Americas and was home to the Spanish Armada during its western voyages.

Galway Cathedral is one of the largest and most impressive buildings in the city. Built between 1958 and 1965.It stands on the site of the old city jail.The architecture draws on many influences the dome and pillars reflect a renaissance style,other features including rose windows and mosaics echo the broad tradition of christian art.The dome stands at 50 metres tall.

Long walk and the Claddagh are both located close to the spanish arch,if you are looking
for a nice area to relax or take a stroll or maybe feed the swans that have taken residence in the Claddagh Quays you will find this quaint little area perfect.It is steeped in local history as it is the oldest part of the city.Take the time to chat with the local fishermen and you will be rewarded with many tales and stories.
